I saw another thread claim filling one 8 pin is enough for the 1070. I realised this too late (I know, I know) as the card just arrived and I was wondering about power usage. Not sure if I described it clearly, but hopefully you see what I mean if you compare it to the actual card and cables. Currently upgrading from a (I suspect to be broken) GTX 980 with 6+8 pins (using 6 and 6+2 cables) to a GTX 1070 with 8+8 pins. For the 6 pin, the two pin part should be hanging outside of the plug, while on the 8 pin plug, all 8 pins should go into the plug together, rather than 6 first then the last 2 after. Once you face them the same way, the pins should slide in easily once you match the holes and pins together. So the latch and the catch should be facing the same way. On your PCI-E cable, the pin should have a latch on the side, that gives the orientation which the pins should be inserted into the plug, the PCI-E plugs on the GPU have catches that is designed for the latch to lock onto it. EPS cable on the other hand is two heads with 4 pins each. PCI-E 6+2 is easily distinguishable by the fact that it has two pin heads on the card end: 1 big part where it has 6 pins, and the other smaller part which has two pins. Well the EPS and PCI-E pins are key'ed differently, meaning that EPS pin shouldn't go into PCI-E plughole easily.
